We're excited to share that Kenora Swimming Sharks is the first club in Ontario to incorporate Swim Ontario's "Freddie's School of Fish" program into our grassroots training!
Freddie and his four friends are fun, relatable characters created by Swim Ontario to help young swimmers understand and embrace important skills and values:
• Freddie - Our leader who models preparedness, respect, and setting a good example
• Flip - The dive and turn expert who loves working hard at walls and streamlines
• Laine - Our detail-oriented swimmer focused on technique, lane safety, and following instructions
• Dash - The determined one who never gives up and keeps trying even when things get tough
• Happy - The heart of the team who spreads positivity, kindness, and cheers everyone on
Instead of just telling kids to "kick faster" or "follow the rules," these characters give them concrete, kid-friendly goals to work toward. When a coach says "show me your Dash kicks to the wall," swimmers instantly understand what's expected. When they earn a "Flip" stamp in their passport, they feel proud of mastering their turns.
This approach focuses on grassroots fundamentals - the building blocks every swimmer needs. It celebrates effort, technique, sportsmanship, and leadership in ways young swimmers can see and understand. Plus, it makes practice more engaging and fun!
We're proud to be pioneers in bringing this innovative program to our swimmers. Watch for your child to come home talking about which "fish" they worked on at practice!
